THWhat can you learn on our intensive courses?

Although many of our students have been coming to Trebinshun House over a good number of years, of course, there is always a first time. It’s natural for people to wonder how much they will actually improve in a course which is ‘only’ a week long. While every course is tailored to the individual, we thought it might be useful to look at some common themes or trends.

If you need to improve your presentation skills….

Many of our students attend international conferences, lead multi-lingual teams or need to pitch to overseas clients. The very nature of these activities can be stressful and now we need to add doing this in English! If you need to work on your presentation skills, we start by looking at topic of your presentation and the key words you’ll use and make sure the pronunciation is clear. Then, we’ll look at how you link your ideas and how you can signal the start of each new part or idea. How about pacing (how fast you speak and how you can use pauses for emphasis) or dealing with difficult questions? We also cover your style in your native language and how that can be transferred to English. According to what you need, we vary the amount of input and practice.

If you need to start working in an international team or are looking for a more international role ….

Being able to interact with a wide range of people on a daily basis is something that can concern our students. They want to be able to speak to their line manager fluently and equally, manage their own team effectively. We may look at different degrees of formality (spoken and written); we will certainly look at everyday English (or small talk), helping you to build relationships. We might need to look at common phrases that are used in meetings and use them in a role play in class. Again, we start by looking at your needs and areas where you’d like to improve.

If you are going to work in an English-speaking country….

The needs here are often a bit different to working with other non-native speakers. When working with native speakers, it’s often necessary to look at ‘natural’ language: use of phrasal verbs, common or fixed expressions. Understanding fast speech will also be important and we break this down into manageable tasks. Also, what are the cultural conventions and expectations in the workplace in the UK (US, Australia etc) and how do they compare with your country? Our teachers have worked in other countries and have first-hand experience of dealing with these questions.
